In order to boost performance on and off the ice, breakfast is key. Trying to hit all the food groups is equally as important.

A great breakfast should contain 500-750 calories, roughly half from carbohydrates, 25 percent from protein and 25 percent from fats. Ideal breakfast carbohydrate foods are fruits and vegetables, along with whole grain cereal, such as oatmeal. Whole grain breads, such as 100 percent whole wheat, multigrain or rye bread are also fantastic options. Excellent sources of breakfast protein (which also contain fats) are eggs, nuts, seeds, peanut butter, milk, cheese, yogurt and meats.

Would you like a breakfast option to consider? A warm bowl of oatmeal topped with berries, nuts or nut butter will do the trick.

Tip: Make your oatmeal with milk or almond milk to make it creamier!
